6 Best AI Study Quiz Makers 2026 — Questions vs Recall
Compare six AI study quiz makers by source material, question format, free-generation limits and repeat practice. Choose a study workflow, not a bigger question bank.

On this page
The best AI study quiz maker is the one that closes your particular learning gap. A quiz generated from a PDF, a timed practice exam and a scheduled flashcard review are different tools—even when each calls itself an AI study assistant.
Start with Gemini Notebook for self-testing from a source collection, Knowt for practicing your own sets without paying for every study mode, Quizlet for turning existing sets into configurable AI practice tests, RemNote for notes and ongoing revision, StudyFetch for lecture-to-exam practice, or Gizmo for short retrieval sessions plus free AI Practice Tests. These are workflow recommendations, not measured accuracy or learning-outcome rankings.
This comparison uses official documentation checked October 23, 2026. We did not run a controlled question-quality benchmark or upload real student records. “Trial” below means a test you can run, not one we claim to have completed.
AI study quiz makers at a glance
Each tool name jumps to its detailed fit, skip and first-elimination test.
| Tool | Starting material → first useful task | First blocker to check |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini Notebook | Source collection → a source-based quiz on Standard access. | Shared compute allowance; retakes are not scheduled revision. |
| Knowt | Own flashcard set → free Practice Test; new lecture files need AI intake. | Free students get 1 AI summary/month, not unlimited conversion. |
| Quizlet | Notes or existing sets → limited free AI Practice Tests. | English and age/region eligibility; specific set selection is web-only. |
| RemNote | Notes, PDF or slides → AI learning plus a lasting card system. | Free files must fit 8 MB; AI credits and feature allowances are separate. |
| StudyFetch | Notes, slides or audio → a first free Practice Test. | Continuing test allowance and web checkout price need confirmation. |
| Gizmo | Deck, course or topic → free AI Practice Test, including written marking. | New-source Magic Imports are capped; Hearts apply to Memorise. |
Already own corrected cards? Start with set practice. Starting from four lecture PDFs? Compare intake limits before choosing by the number of study modes. Quizlet's AI eligibility is not universal; check its current language, age and country rules before building a workflow around it.
For a broad student software stack rather than this specific practice loop, use our AI tools for students comparison. A larger stack is not automatically a better quiz workflow.
Compare the practice loop, not the feature count
Decide what happens after the first set of questions. Do you need immediate correction, a test score at the end, or material brought back on a later date?
| Tool | Questions and feedback | Repeat-practice boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini Notebook | Source-based quizzes; difficulty and focus controls; answer explanations. | Review and retake; missed-card practice. Do not infer spaced scheduling from remembering progress. |
| Knowt | Own-set multiple-choice, written and true/false practice, plus flashcards. | Wrong-only retries, session history and a separate spaced-repetition mode. |
| Quizlet | AI Practice Tests from notes or sets, with question count, types and timer. | Score and review after submission; ordinary Test is a separate set-based mode. |
| RemNote | Guided Learn supports multiple-choice/free-response quizzes and study/test modes. | Notes, cards and spaced repetition support ongoing revision; AI use is metered. |
| StudyFetch | QuizFetch gives immediate feedback; Practice Tests are timed with topic breakdowns. | Confidence ratings and missed questions inform further quiz practice. |
| Gizmo | Free AI Practice Tests: multiple-choice, select-all and written answers marked against a scheme. | Score, marking review and save-to-flashcards; separate Memorise uses Hearts. |
The distinctions matter. A timed multiple-choice session does not prove you can write a derivation. Repeating the same distractors can test recognition rather than transfer. None of the vendors' grade-improvement testimonials establishes which tool will produce the most accurate questions for your syllabus.
What free actually buys—and what makes you pay
These public plan boundaries were checked on October 23, 2026. Dollar amounts are USD web offers except the explicitly labeled US iOS example; they are not a tax-inclusive quote for every region or storefront. Annual totals are not month-to-month contracts.
| Tool | Free-entry boundary | Paid decision boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini Notebook | Standard access is free; generation uses a shared compute allowance. | Higher limits come through eligible Google AI, Workspace or Cloud plans. Check current usage, not an old fixed quizzes/day number. |
| Knowt | Own sets have all study modes; free students get 1 AI summary/month. | Ultra lists $24.99 monthly or $149.99 upfront annually. Pay when repeated source conversion, not basic set practice, is the bottleneck. |
| Quizlet | Free accounts have limited AI Practice Test access. | Paid access still has plan limits; verify the current account offer rather than assuming “Plus” means unlimited. |
| RemNote | 250 AI credits/month; free files up to 8 MB, 3 annotated PDFs. Manual notes/cards are unlimited. | Pro $96/year, 1,000 monthly credits and 300 MB files; Pro with AI $216/year, 20,000 credits. Feature allowances also apply. |
| StudyFetch | The vendor offers a first practice test without paying upfront. | US iOS: Premium $19.99/month or $96/year. Web price and continuing Practice Test entitlement remain unverified. |
| Gizmo | Free AI Practice Tests; 2 Magic Imports/day, at least 20 minutes apart. No verified unlimited-free test quota. | Unlimited removes import/Hearts restrictions; weekly/yearly prices vary by device and region. Confirm the renewal period. |
Plan sources: Google's access tiers, Knowt's subscription offers, RemNote's pricing and StudyFetch's developer-listed US iOS purchases. The detailed sections below link the relevant practice-mode and subscription rules.
A practical workload check: four new lecture files each week is roughly 16 files in a four-week study block. Knowt's one free monthly AI summary cannot cover that workflow, even though practicing a set you already own remains free. Gizmo's daily import count might accommodate four files spread across the week, but a same-evening backlog could hit its spacing or daily limit. That is allowance arithmetic—not a claim that an import produces equally good questions in both tools.
Keep the syllabus, original files and a small corrected question bank outside the subscription. Re-generating a quiz is not the same as preserving edits, answers, progress and future review dates.
The six routes in detail
Gemini Notebook
Best for: A source collection you want to question and revisit without first building a structured deck. Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in July 2026; it remains a standalone product rather than merely a Gemini chat prompt.
Its quiz and flashcard documentation describes Studio generation with difficulty and focus controls, explanations, review and retakes. Flashcards can be downloaded as CSV, subject to restrictions on some publisher sources. That does not establish a portable quiz bank with scores and review history.
Skip if: You need a due-card scheduler or guaranteed daily question count. Google's current usage rules use compute-based limits rather than a simple per-quiz allowance. Also verify availability with a school administrator before assuming a personal-account feature is enabled on a managed account.
Trial / first elimination test: Use a short permitted chapter and request questions on two named learning objectives. Check an explanation against the original passage, include one concept absent from the source to see whether it invents an answer, and revisit the session later. Rule it out if the explanations cannot be checked efficiently or its repeat workflow does not match your revision plan.
Best for: A learner whose useful asset is an existing set, not an endless stream of new AI summaries. The Knowt detail page covers its broader study role; here the relevant distinction is free practice versus metered intake.
The student free-plan guide separates own-set study modes from AI summaries and exam-hub allowances. Its Practice Test instructions support starred terms, question-format choices, wrong-only retries and previous-session results. Generating questions from a term-definition pair is not the same as generating a new application problem from an entire chapter.
Skip if: Your non-negotiable requirement is converting every lecture PDF for free. The student allowance is one AI summary per month; free teacher access is a different offer. Ultra's annual page displays an inconsistent monthly equivalent, so compare the verified $149.99 annual total rather than copying that equivalent into your budget.
Trial / first elimination test: Start with a corrected 20-card set. Run a written round, deliberately use a valid paraphrase, then retry only misses. Reject the fit if grading reinforces a wrong definition or if your real task requires source reasoning the set does not contain.
Best for: Someone already invested in Quizlet sets who wants to configure a fuller test before rebuilding elsewhere. See the Quizlet overview for general fit, but do not confuse its different testing features.
Official Practice Tests guidance distinguishes AI tests from ordinary Test mode. AI tests use uploaded notes or sets, with question counts, types and time limits. Free access is limited; English, age and supported-country conditions apply. Selecting particular existing sets for conversion is documented as web-only, so a phone-only learner should verify that exact route first.
Skip if: You need to assume every language, country and age group gets the same AI feature—or that a short written response is an essay-grading workflow. The subscription guide describes paid usage limits; check the actual offer before paying for an assumed unlimited tier.
Trial / first elimination test: On the device you will use, generate a test from the exact set or notes you want to study. Check eligibility, timer, answer format and feedback before subscribing. If you only need ordinary set recall, try that existing mode first rather than paying solely for an AI label.
RemNote
Best for: Keeping source notes, corrected cards and revision together across a term. Its Guided Learn documentation separates Study Mode's immediate answers from Test Mode's end-of-session score and review, with multiple-choice and free-response options.

Official RemNote help-center UI example from June 2026, not a ToolWorthy account test. The source pane matters when checking a generated study item.
The PDF reader guide documents source pins for AI-generated flashcards. Do not extend that statement into a guarantee that every generated quiz answer has a sentence-level citation. The AI-credit guide also makes clear that usage cost varies with tokens; 250 credits is not a promise of 250 questions. Free file uploads have an 8 MB per-file maximum and 20 files/day limit. File size, the three-document annotation allowance, AI feature allowances and credits are separate constraints: a large scanned chapter can fail before credits matter.
Skip if: You only want a disposable ten-question quiz and do not want to maintain notes or cards. Unlimited manual cards and paid AI generation solve different problems. Having a desktop or offline workflow does not mean remote AI generation happens locally.
Trial / first elimination test: Generate a small section, correct an item against its source, and put the corrected material into your review workflow. Check the estimated credit cost before scaling. Rule it out if maintaining that system takes more attention than the repeated study it replaces.
StudyFetch
Best for: Combining lecture material with multiple question formats and topic-level follow-up. Its QuizFetch page describes immediate feedback, confidence ratings and reappearance of missed questions; its Practice Test Maker describes timed tests and topic breakdowns.

Official StudyFetch Academy UI example: confidence is recorded separately from the answer. This is a documented example, not our own account test or evidence of exam readiness.
The latter also advertises specialized formats such as MCAT passages, NCLEX select-all and AP free response. Treat those as vendor-described formats, not approval by the exam owner or proof of difficulty matching. For clinical or professional exams, use the relevant official syllabus and authorized preparation materials as your benchmark.
The developer's US iOS listing gives a Premium price benchmark of $19.99 monthly or $96 annually, checked October 23, 2026. This does not establish web pricing, regional offers, cross-platform entitlements or unlimited Practice Tests.
Skip if: You require a verified continuing number of generated tests before signing in. We verified the first-test free offer and the US iOS price, not the recurring allowance for this exact workflow. Confirm that entitlement before paying; unknown is not the same as expensive or unavailable.
Trial / first elimination test: Use one permitted lecture and a learning objective that requires application, not vocabulary. Compare a short QuizFetch session with a full Practice Test. Reject the match if the output only recalls isolated facts, rewards a wrong explanation, or lacks your exam's required response format. Confirm subscription limits before moving the rest of the course.
Gizmo
Best for: Combining short repeat sessions with a free AI Practice Test from a deck, course or topic. The Practice Test guide confirms access for free and Unlimited users, with multiple-choice, select-all and written answers marked against a scheme. The results workflow includes scores, marking criteria, explanations and saving questions as flashcards. Free access is not proof of unlimited test generations.
The important constraint is where the limits apply. Its free-plan guide lists two Magic Imports per day with a 20-minute interval. The separate Hearts guide says wrong answers in Memorise consume the 15-heart allowance, followed by a ten-minute wait when exhausted; flashcard-only review does not use Hearts. Do not transfer that Memorise interruption rule to every Practice Test.
Skip if: Interruptions would derail an intensive last-minute session, or you need a batch of new files imported immediately. Unlimited removes those restrictions, but the subscription guide shows weekly and annual options with device/region-dependent prices. A weekly offer is a recurring subscription, not automatically a one-off exam pass.
Trial / first elimination test: Use a small corrected deck in both Memorise and Practice Test. Try a valid written paraphrase, inspect its mark scheme and save a missed question as a card. Rule it out if marking hides a misconception or source intake cannot handle your deadline. Streaks and confidence are engagement signals, not proof that you can solve a new problem.
A short test before you trust any generated question bank
Use material you are allowed to upload. Remove names, student identifiers, private feedback and sensitive case details; follow your course's AI policy. Do not upload a restricted exam or assume a free personal account has your school's data agreement.
- Choose a representative sample. Include a definition, a distinction, an application and, if relevant, a diagram or equation. Check whether the input was actually extracted; a readable PDF page does not guarantee the model understood its figure.
- Specify the examination task. State topic boundaries, response format and learning objectives. Ask for plausible distractors and explanations—not just more questions.
- Audit a small batch. Check the answer key, ambiguity, invented facts and missing conditions against the source. A citation can support a statement without proving the whole question is well-formed.
- Test transfer. After practicing, close the tool and answer a differently worded application question without its options. A high score on repeated items is not an independent mastery estimate.
- Check the repeat and exit routes. Can you correct an item, return to it later and retain your usable material? A CSV of cards, a PDF and an app's review history are different assets.
If your actual bottleneck is understanding an assigned problem rather than generating retrieval practice, our homework-helper comparison covers that different job. Teachers assigning and grading a class should evaluate assessment delivery, not assume a student quiz app replaces it.
When a dedicated quiz generator is a better fit
Quizgecko is worth a side-by-side trial if you want source conversion, editable quizzes and scheduled card review without adopting RemNote's broader notes system. Its workflow guide documents PDF/slides/text/audio inputs and configurable questions; its card-review guide documents scheduled repetition. This overlaps the six routes rather than adding a missing lane. Verify current upload and free/trial allowances before moving a course; a three-day trial is not a recurring free quota.
Jungle AI is a concrete occasional-file option: its Free plan lists 2 generations/month and 30 pages/document, checked October 23, 2026. That may suit trying two short lecture documents, but not the four-files-every-week workload above. These are generation/page limits, not guaranteed question counts or evidence of better questions. Paid prices were not resolved on the public page in this check.
Revisely is a credible direct source-to-quiz route when you want less of a study workspace. Its official generator lists editable quizzes and $11.99/month paid access; the free plan's unlimited quizzes are explicitly non-AI. Compare its upload and output limits if document conversion is your only missing step.
If you already have a corrected Anki deck, do not rebuild it just to acquire AI generation. A general chat assistant can also be sufficient for a small, manually checked practice batch; do not assume that a conversation automatically supplies scheduled revision, a durable question bank or exam-aligned scoring. Buy a new workflow only when it removes repeated work you actually have.
AI study quiz maker FAQ
What is the best free AI study quiz maker?
For source-based self-testing, check Gemini Notebook Standard; for an owned set, Knowt's free practice modes may be enough. Gizmo also offers free AI Practice Tests, including written marking. None implies unlimited source intake or test generation: Google uses compute limits, Knowt meters AI summaries and Gizmo caps Magic Imports. Choose the complete workflow, not the word “free.”
Can AI turn a PDF or lecture into a practice test?
Yes, several tools here document that route. First check extraction quality, especially diagrams, equations and scans, then audit a small generated batch against the original material. A tool accepting a PDF does not prove it preserved every detail or matched your exam's difficulty.
Should I choose quizzes or spaced-repetition flashcards?
Use a quiz to sample knowledge or rehearse a response format; use scheduled card review when facts need to return over time. You may need both. Immediate feedback, retaking missed questions and a due-card schedule are distinct capabilities, so verify which loop the product actually supplies.
Are AI-generated practice tests accurate enough for an exam?
Treat them as draft practice, not an authoritative exam bank. Check the syllabus, answer key, explanation and missing assumptions. For professional or clinical exams, compare against authorized preparation material; a vendor naming the exam format is not evidence of official endorsement or validated scoring.
Which option should I try if I already use Quizlet?
First establish whether ordinary Test mode solves the problem. If you need AI-generated Practice Tests, verify your eligibility, current plan limits and device route. Compare Knowt when own-set study access is the bottleneck, or RemNote when the real need is a longer-term notes-and-revision system. Moving is worthwhile only if that missing step improves.
